The retrieval of liquids from 55 gal and bulk containers
can be a difficult task. Ball valves can be installed
towards the bottom of bulk containers, so that customers
can have access to its content. Leaks can form
where these ball valves are installed, and flow control
with these valves can be difficult and dangerous. For
55 gallon drums, cradles can be used with plastic faucets
to retrieve product. These faucets can leak, flow rates
are painfully slow and after a short period of time,
the faucets are difficult to operate.
Drum pumps allow for fast, efficient transfer of solutions
from both bulk containers, drums, and even pails. A
drum pump unit consists of a drum pump tube and a motor.
The drum pump tube is inserted into the container, the
discharge hose is inserted into the empty container,
and the pump is activated. The liquid is transferred
quickly, safely, and in a controlled manner. For steel
containers, a grounding or bonding wire should be used
for safe transfer.
Drum pumps can be either electric or pneumatic. Drum
pump tubes can be manufactured of polypropylene, stainless
steel, Hastelloy C®, and Kynar. The choice of pump
tube construction depends on the solution to be transferred
and the temperature of that solution.
