Filter media, as the name implies, is a medium to collect
insoluble particles in a filtration unit. Filter media
can either be permanent or disposable. When the filtration
system becomes loaded or full of a contaminant, the
spent filter media must be cleaned or replaced.
The choice of filter media depends on the amount and
type of contaminant to be removed, the contaminant size,
and temperature.
Disposable filter media can be manufactured of cellulose
(paper) and a variety of poly materials. Once the media
has been contaminated, it must be classified either
as a non-hazardous or hazardous waste, and properly
disposed of.
Permanent media filtration units utilize a variety
of media. Some examples are; grooved horizontal discs,
perforated or mesh cones, a combination of gravel and
sand, and membranes. The use of permanent media minimizes
the generation of additional waste from filter media.
